Euryale ferox, commonly known as prickly waterlily, makhana or Gorgon plant, is a species of water lily found in southern and eastern Asia, and the only extant member of the genus Euryale. The edible seeds, called fox nuts or makhana when dried, are eaten in Asia.
Antioxidant
Euryale ferox polysaccharide can significantly increase the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH PX) in mice, reduce the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) in liver and kidney of mice, and has a protective effect on oxidative damage induced by alloxan in mice.
Resist fatigue
The study found that Euryale ferox polysaccharide can significantly improve the weight-bearing swimming time of mice, improve the body's energy metabolism, accelerate the decomposition and energy supply of liver glycogen, reduce the decomposition of protein and nitrogen-containing compounds, and reduce the content of blood urea nitrogen, thus playing an anti fatigue role.
Anti myocardial ischemia
Euryale ferox seed can reduce the degree of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury, improve the ventricular function after ischemia, reduce the size of myocardial infarction, and protect the myocardium. The mechanism may be related to scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inducing the expression of thioredoxin-1 (Trx-1) and its related protein-32 (trp-32).
Hypoglycemic
It was found that polysaccharide components could reverse the symptoms of weight loss in model mice, reduce blood glucose and insulin levels, improve oral glucose tolerance, increase liver glycogen content and glucokinase (GCK) activity, regulate the expression of GCK mRNA in the liver, and reduce blood glucose by increasing serum insulin levels.
other
In addition, Euryale ferox seed also has the functions of protecting gastric mucosa, strengthening spleen and stomach, supplementing qi and nourishing blood.
