The results of in vivo, in vitro and clinical studies showed that ginger and its phytochemicals, including 6-gingerol, gingerone and cedrol, were effective anti rheumatic drugs. They alter signaling pathways important in the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis and lead to the inhibition of proinflammatory cytokines. Other polyphenols such as gingerols and gingerols, together with sesquiterpenes, have been shown to inhibit proinflammatory cytokines. Therefore, gingerol and its derivatives can replace NSAIDs without serious gastrointestinal or renal side effects.
