About the origin of the name of astragalus, there is a story, according to legend, in ancient times there was an old Chinese medicine called Dai grits, good at acupuncture, generous and modest, healer. One day when he went up the mountain to collect medicine, he passed by a cliff, and saw a woman crying on the edge of the cliff, the original woman's child accidentally fell off the cliff, although hooked by a tree branch, temporarily saved his life, but at any time there is the possibility of falling. On the very day of the old man's burial, a kind of herb grew beside the grave. In honor of the old man, the people named this herb "Huang Jie". Later, Li Shizhen explained in the Compendium of Materia Medica: Jie, long also, yellow Jie color yellow, for the long of the tonic, so the name.

Active Ingredient

Astragalus mainly contains flavonoids, saponins, polysaccharides, amino acids and other active ingredients.

  • Polysaccharides: The polysaccharides of Astragalus mainly include glucans and heteropolysaccharides. Among them, there are water-soluble glucan and water-insoluble glucan. Heteropolysaccharides contained in Astragalus are mostly water-soluble acidic heteropolysaccharides, mainly composed of glucose, rhamnose, arabinose and galactose, with a small amount of glucuronic acid composed of galacturonic acid and glucuronic acid; while some heteropolysaccharides are composed of glucose and arabinose only.

  • Saponins: important active ingredients in Astragalus. At present, more than 40 kinds of saponins have been isolated from Astragalus, mainly Astragaloside Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ, Ⅳ, Ⅴ, Ⅵ, Ⅶ, iso-Astragaloside Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅳ and soybean saponin Ⅰ and so on. In addition to soybean saponin Ⅰ, astragaloside V, the rest of the ring lanolin alkyl tetracyclic triterpene saponins for the glycoside, always called astragaloside.

  • Flavonoids: Astragalus is divided into flavonoids or flavonoids more than 30 kinds of substances, mainly quercetin, silymarin, isorhamnetin, silymarin isocitrulline, hydroxyisoflavonoids, isoflavanes, rutin, mangosteen, trichothecenes isoflavonoids and so on. The total flavonoids of Astragalus mainly contain 6 kinds of monomer compounds, among which 4 kinds are isoflavones, they are: β-sitosterol, mangiferin, mullein isoflavone, β-sitosterol-3-0-β-D-glucoside, mangiferin-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside and mullein isoflavone-7-0-β-D-glucopyranoside.

  • Amino acids: There are about 25 kinds of amino acids contained in Astragalus, such as γ-aminobutyric acid, asparagine, threonine, serine and so on. In addition, Astragalus also contains trace elements, sterols, folic acid, linolenic acid, riboflavin and so on.

Research on Astragalus has gradually increased and has received attention not only in the field of traditional Chinese medicine, but also in modern medical and biological research. Some studies have shown that Astragalus has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor effects, and has a regulatory effect on the cardiovascular and immune systems.

●Inhibit the malignant proliferation of cancer cells: Astragaloside can hinder the proliferation of cancer cells by blocking the mitosis of cells.

●Inhibition of cancer cell invasion and metastasis: Astragaloside can greatly reduce the migration rate of cancer cells and inhibit the migration effect significantly. Meanwhile, total flavonoids of Astragalus can also inhibit the growth, metastasis and invasion of thymic cancer cells by regulating the expression of FAK and BRCA1.

Anticancer

Astragalus polysaccharide can resist lipopolysaccharide infection by decreasing the expression of inflammatory factors and increasing the expression of tight junction proteins; Astragalus polysaccharide has anti-inflammatory activity in vitro and immunomodulatory and growth-promoting activity in vivo, and the anti-inflammatory effect of Astragalus polysaccharide was better in the preventive additive, which suggests that Astragalus polysaccharide can be used as an anti-inflammatory or immunomodulatory additive for broiler chicks.

                Anti-inflammatory

In vivo application of Astragalus polysaccharide can significantly reduce the level of malondialdehyde in serum and lymphatic tissues of traumatized mice, increase glutathione

It also increased glutathione content, and increased the activities of glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase, reduced the damage of oxygen free radicals to lymphocyte membranes, and improved the mobility of lymphocytes.
